GRENZLAND
Vor genau hundert Jahren fuhr Joseph Roth in die Ukraine und berichtete von dort – aus seiner Heimat – für die Frankfurter Zeitung. Wir folgen seinen Spuren, die sich quer durch Europa ziehen, bis nach Lviv und zeigen dort am Zankovetska Nationaltheater die Inszenierung WER – VERDAMMT – IST JOSEPH ROTH? In Form von kurzen Blog-Einträgen wird unser Team über die nächsten Tage und Wochen von unserer Arbeit in Lviv erzählen.
Bewegt man sich auf die Grenze der Ukraine zu, fällt der rege Reiseverkehr auf. Der Nachtzug Wien-Lviv ist zum Beispiel immer ausgebucht. An der Grenze ins Land bilden sich Schlangen. Eine ukrainische Schauspielerin beschrieb einmal: „Die Reisen zurück nach Hause haben etwas Feierliches.“ Für mich ist die Reise in die Ukraine ein Arbeitsauftrag – eine Theaterinszenierung, zu der mich das Zankovetska Nationaltheater in Lviv eingeladen hat. Bei meinem ersten Besuch während der full-scale-invasion in Kyjiw hatte mich der Intendant Maksym Golenko angesprochen: „Jan, könntest du ein Stück bei uns inszenieren?“ – „Klar. Wann?“ – „Im Herbst!“ – „Welchem Herbst?“ – „Diesen Herbst.“
Im Krieg planen auch die Theater kurzfristig. So sind wir – ein deutsch-österreichisch-ukrainisches Team auf dem Weg nach Lviv. Zur Vorbereitung waren wir im Frühjahr schon einmal zwei Wochen lang hier. Im Zentrum stand die Frage: Was für eine Kunst brauchen das Theater, die Stadt, die Menschen gerade? Ein Schauspieler fand eine gute Antwort: „Wir müssen auf der Bühne nicht wiederholen, was wir in der Realität erleben: Düsternis, Verzweiflung, Tod. Aber leichte Ablenkung wäre auch verlogen. Es muss also eine Kunst sein, die uns im Hier und Jetzt zusammenbringt. Wir wollen lachen und gleichzeitig nicht so tun, als gäbe es den Krieg da draußen nicht.“
BORDERLAND
Exactly one hundred years ago, Joseph Roth travelled to Ukraine and reported from there – his homeland – for the Frankfurter Zeitung. We are following in his footsteps across Europe to Lviv to stage our production of WHO – THE FUCK – IS JOSEPH ROTH? at the Zankovetska National Theatre. Over the next few weeks and days, our team will report on our work in Lviv through short blog posts.
As you approach the border with Ukraine, you notice the busy traffic. For example, the overnight train from Vienna to Lviv is always fully booked. Queues always form at the border into the country. A Ukrainian actress once said: ‘Travelling back home has something festive about it.’ My trip to Ukraine is a work assignment – a theatre production which the team at the Zankovetska National Theatre in Lviv has invited meto devise a show. On my first visit during the full-scale invasion in Kyiv, the theatre director Maksym Golenko asked: ‘Jan, could you direct a play for us?’I replied, ‘Sure. When?’ To my surprise, he said: ‘In autumn!’ I had to say ‘Which autumn?’ and he told me ‘This autumn!’
In war, even theatres plan at short notice. So here we are – a German-Austrian-Ukrainian team on our way to Lviv. We originally came in spring for a fortnight to prepare. Our central question was: What kind of art does the theatre, the city and the people need right now? One actor gave a good answer: ‘We don’t have to repeat on stage what we experience in reality: gloom, despair, death. But, simple escapism would also be dishonest. So, it has to be a piece of art that brings us together in the here and now. We want to laugh, but at the same time we can’t pretend the war out there doesn’t exist.’
