Joseph Roth ist verstorben. Der im westukrainischen Brody geborene Schriftsteller und Journalist wird in Paris beigesetzt. Am offenen Grab streiten sich Juden und Katholiken um Roths Seele, die auch noch von den Kommunisten gerettet werden soll, während ein Abgesandter der Habsburger einen Kranz niederlegt. Juden, Katholiken, Kommunisten, Monarchisten: Alle halten sie ihn für einen der ihren. Bleibt die Frage: Who the fuck war Joseph Roth?

Gemeinsam mit dem Zankovetska Nationaltheater in Lviv geht peaches&rooster der Frage nach: Who the fuck war Joseph Roth. Und stößt dabei auf viele Widersprüche, auf Vielfalt, auf enge Verbindungen zwischen der Ukraine und den Ländern der EU.
Das Zankovetska Nationaltheater in Lviv hat den Regisseur Jan-Christoph Gockel und seine Theaterkompanie peaches&rooster zu einer Zusammenarbeit eingeladen. Im Oktober 2024 wird in Lviv der Theaterabend WER, VERDAMMT, IST JOSEPH ROTH? entstehen. Das Projekt arbeitet eng mit dem Lviv Urban History Center zusammen; die Initiative erforscht u.a. das jüdische Leben in der Stadt.

Йозеф Рот помер. Письменник, журналіст, народжений в Бродах на західній Україні, його ховають в Парижі. Біля відкритої ще могили, євреї та католики сваряться за його душу, за неї тут же “моляться” комуністи, а Габсбургский емісар несе вінок. Євреї, католики, комуністи, монархісти – вони всі вважають Йозефа Рота своїм. Питання залишається відкритим: Хто ж, в біса, такий той Йозеф Рот?
“Він носив маски австрійського лейтенанта, легітиміста, товариша Габсбургів, католика (ніколи не хрещений єврей), насмішника і страждальця, пророка і романтика, новатора і спадкоємця, мудрого і завзятого, а іноді навіть просто маску п’яниці».

Разом з Львівським національним театром імені Марії Заньковецької, peaches&rooster досліджують: Хто, в біса, такий Йозеф Рот? По дорозі зустрічається багато суперечностей, різноманіття, прослідковується тісний зв’язок між Україною та іншими країнами Європи. На запрошення Львівського національного театру імені Марії Заньковецької п’єсу ставитиме режисер Ян-Крістоф Ґьоркель та його компанія peaches&rooster. Постановка Хто, в біса, такий Йозеф Рот? Відбудеться в жовтні 2024 року у Львові.

Joseph Roth has passed away. The writer and journalist, who was born in Brody in western Ukraine, is being buried in Paris. At the side of his open grave, Jews and Catholics fight over Roth’s soul, which the Communists are also trying to save, while a Habsburg emissary lays down a wreath. Jews, Catholics, Communists, monarchists: they all thought Joseph Roth was one of their own. The question remains: Who the fuck was Joseph Roth?

Together with the Zankovetska National Theater in Lviv, peaches&rooster explores the question: Who the fuck was Joseph Roth? They discover many contradictions, a lot of diversity and a close connection between Ukraine and countries of the EU.
The Zankovetska National Theatre in Lviv has invited director Jan-Christoph Gockel and his theatre company peaches&rooster to collaborate. The theatre show WHO THE FUCK IS JOSEPH ROTH? will be produced in Lviv in October 2024. The project will work closely together with the Lviv Urban History Center; an initiative which among other things, researches Jewish life in the city. In connection with this theatre project, the Lviv Urban History Center will also bring out a publication.
